Ali and Zuhal are two teenagers who grew up in an orphanage with a bond as strong as between brother and sister. When Ali moves out on account of his age, Zuhal is put into the dubious care of a foster family and is no longer allowed to see him. In a desperate attempt to save Zuhal from a scheduled arranged marriage, Ali commits a terrible crime, and they find themselves on the run, away from civilization and into the woods. There, in a secluded space deep in the forest, they try to start a new life in a mystical natural environment full of wonders, strange residents and concrete threats. One day, however, Ali finds Zuhal drenched in blood and doesn’t have any choice but to take her back to the city again.

Hundreds of thousands of cats roam the metropolis of Istanbul freely. For thousands of years they’ve wandered in and out of people’s lives, becoming an essential part of the communities that make the city so rich. Claiming no owners, these animals live between two worlds, neither wild nor tame – and they bring joy and purpose to those people they choose to adopt. In Istanbul, cats are the mirrors to the people, allowing them to reflect on their lives in ways nothing else could.

Cem Kaya’s vibrant documentary offers an entertaining essay on Turkish popular cinema through the years and the role of “copy culture” in Yeşilçam, the Turkish film industry. Through abundant film excerpts and interviews with actors and filmmakers, this documentary revisits the wild heyday of Turkish cinema in the sixties and seventies, back when Yeşilçam was producing hundreds of titles annually. Many of these films were blatantly lifted from Hollywood hits and churned out quickly in hackneyed, low tech fashion. Name any Western hit film, there’s a Turkish version to it, be it Tarzan, Dracula, The Wizard of Oz, The Exorcist, Rambo, Superman or Star Wars. What they lacked in technology they compensated through excessive use of manpower both behind and in front of the camera.

In the Groom's Block, the guards and prison governor manipulate tensions, as prisoners push each other to the edge of existence. The film's story and characters are drawn from everyday life. We experience the tension and paradox of a violent prison and justice system reflecting the shifting moral norms and structure of Turkish society. The jailed and jailers enforce violent justice daily, expressing in their lives a society confronted with its need to hide from itself, in desperate denial of its cruel contradictions.

Ibrahim works construction on a luxury high-rise apartment building; the pay is irregular but the income supports his family, who live with relatives outside town. The unexpected diagnosis of lung cancer, however, throws his life off balance, depriving him of any guarantees for even the immediate future. When a rumor gets around that the construction company paid handsome compensation to the family of an employee who lost his life in a tragic work accident, Ibrahim begins to entertain an audacious idea. This exceptionally mature directorial debut outlines the dangers of a system that forces workers to sacrifice their lives to the interests of economic development. In a world full of dreams and desires, where the future can be a lucrative commodity, My Father’s Wings demonstrates the dignity of a man who has run out of hope for the future, highlighting his inner strength as he contemplates sacrificing himself for his family.
